Rayon Sports head to Nigeria in search for a vital result

Posted on Apr 14 2017

The Rwanda Peace Cup reigning champions Rayon Sports departed for Nigeria today morning ahead of their Sunday’s first leg clash of the CAF Confederations Cup play-off round action which will be staged at the Liberation Stadium at 16h00 in Port Harcourt.

The 25-man squad composed of 18 players and 7 officials departed aboard RwandAir to Lagos where they will be airlifted to Port Harcourt later in the afternoon.

Head coach Massoud Djuma Irambona has a mission of securing a positive result against Rivers United before finishing off the task in Kigali next week.

He said, “We go into Sunday’s game well prepared and we will try to battle for the result that we need. Every player has shown commitment and desire to stage a good performance in Nigeria and depending on the previous league matches, we have shown our intent and our mission remains unchanged going into Sunday’s game,”

“Our mission is to change Rwanda’s poor record in CAF Competitions by qualifying to the group stage of this competition. Reaching the group stage will bring a positive impact not only to our club but to Rwandan football in general,” added Irambona.

However, Rayon Sports will face a tough hurdle in their bid to snatch a positive result away in Port Harcourt considering Rivers United‘s unbeaten home record.

In the two previous rounds of the CAF Champions League, Rivers United edged AS Real Bamako 4-0 and Al Merreikh of Sudan 3-0 before they collapsed 4-0 in Khartoum last month to be relegated to the Confederation Cup.

Rayon Sports will miss entertaining attacking midfielder Shassir Nahimana who sick and defender Ange Mutsinzi who is will be serving his second match suspension following a red card secured in the return leg against Al Wau Salaam of South Sudan.

The return between Rayon Sports and Rivers United will be staged in Kigali on April 22 at Stade Amahoro where the winner between the two sides will proceed to the lucrative group stages, assured of at least pocketing $275,000.
