CAF CC: Rayon Sports lose first leg tie to Rivers United

Posted on Apr 16 2017

Rwanda’s Peace Cup reigning champions Rayon Sports suffered a setback in their bid to qualify for the CAF Confederations Cup group stage as they lost the opening leg of the Play-Off round on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

The hosts, Rivers United registered a 2-0 first leg win with Emeka Atuloma volleying home Ifeanyi Nweke’s cross to put the Nigerian club ahead in the 29th minute inside the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Port Harcourt.

After conceding the opening goal, Rayon Sports fought hard, but a coordinated defense of Rivers United prevented any danger until the end of the first half.

After recess, Rivers United intensified their quest for more goals as they exerted pressure in Rayon Sport’s half, a feat which earned the second goal in the 51st minute courtesy of a volley shot from Guy Kuemain.

Coach Massoud Djuma Irambona made some changes by bringing in Irambona Eric for Manishimwe Djabel to boost his attack options. This substitution nearly paid off for the Blues as Savio Nshuti Dominique picked a ball and connected it to Moussa Camara who could not find the net despite being in a clear position to slot an away goal.

With fifteen minutes to the end of the game, Tidiane Kone who replaced Niyonzima Olivier, Muhire Kevin who came in for Nova Bayama and Kwizera Pierro failed to capitalize on the few chances gotten infront of the goal as their attempts went off target.

Rayon Sports will have to overturn the 0-2 goal deficit next Saturday in Kigali when they host Rivers United in the return leg to be assured of a place in the CAF Confederation Group Stage Round.
