Rayon Sports are 2016/17 Azam Rwanda Premier League Champions

Posted on May 17 2017

Rayon Sports have won the 2016/17 Azam Rwanda Premier League title, their eighth league trophy in their history.

Massoud Irambona Djuma‘s side have won the Azam Rwanda Premier League with four games to spare after a double from Malian international Moussa Camara secured the title with a 2-1 win over Mukura VS on Wednesday at Stade de Kigali.

Camara who was returning from a suspension following his AWOL acts put the Blues ahead in the 13th minute as he scored a loose ball past Mukura VS goalie Andre Mazimpaka resulting from Pierre Kwizera’s free kick.

The Malian snatched a brace in the 54th minute, his tenth of the season, as he dribbled past Mukura VS defenders following a long ball from goalie Eric Ndayishimiye, to comfortably net past Mazimpaka to send Rayon Sports fans in jubilation.

Two minutes later, Mukura VS snatched a consolation goal courtesy of Yusuf Habimana off a set-piece from Ibrahim Nshimiyimana.

The win took Coach Massoud Irambona Djuma’s side 13 points clear of second-place and arch rivals APR Fc, who have only twelve points left to play for.

The loss left Huye-based side Mukura VS ranked ninth with 32 points.

With the Azam Rwanda Premier League title already secured, Rayon Sports will have to honour their remaining four fixtures as they wait for the title awarding ceremony at the end of the season.

The remaining four match days will see Rayon Sports play away to relegated side Pepiniere Fc on Saturday, May 20, 2017 in Ruyenzi, Etincelles Fc on May 23 at Umuganda stadium, host arch-rival APR Fc at Amahoro Stadium on May 28 before winding up their season campaign against SC Kiyovu at Mumena stadium.

Rayon Sports who will represent Rwanda at next year’s Total CAF Champions League is also still contention for the Peace Cup title. They face Police Fc in the quarter final round next month for a place in the semi finals.
