Rwanda moves eight places up in FIFA rankings

Rwanda has moved eight places up to 119th in the latest rankings FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking released on Thursday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Rwanda moved eight places up in latest FIFA world rankings having knocked out Tanzania in the second round of the 2018 CHAN Qualifiers.

Rwanda who had dropped eight places in the month of June is ranked 119th with 260 points.

Speaking to Ferwafa.rw on the current ranking, Amavubi head coach Antoine Hey said, “We see it as a proof to our hard work. Coming up into the top 100 is our short team target,”

Rwanda’s recent 2-1 win over Sudan played last week in Kigali was not accounted for in the current rankings hence would be considered by in next month’s FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking which will be published on 14 September 2017.

Regionally, Uganda is the highly ranked East Africa nation at position 73rd in the world, followed by Kenya in 82nd position in the world.

Both Rwanda and Uganda face-off in the third round qualifier of the 2018 CHAN Qualifiers with the winner heading to next year’s continental championship which will be held in Kenya.

Tanzania are tied on 120th position with Ethiopia. Tanzania dropped six places while Ethiopia improved 16 places having knocked out Djibouti in the second round of the CHAN qualifiers.

Egypt is the top ranked African nation at 25th in the World followed by DR Congo at number 28 while Kenya’s next opponent, Ghana is placed 50th in the World.

Brazil have returned to the top of the World Ranking after a one-month hiatus, replacing reigning Fifa World Cup champions Germany, who have dropped a place down.

Argentina remains in third but the heavyweight trio are accompanied in the top five by two sides reaching unusually heady heights.

Switzerland (4th, up 1) have not been ranked higher since the very first edition of the Fifa World Ranking, while Poland (5th, up 1) are at an all-time high.
