Regional FA Chiefs agree on plans to revive Cecafa region

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) has on resolutions to revive the region following an Extraordinary General Assembly held in Sudan last week.

Regional Football Associations presidents met in an extraordinary general assembly held in Khartoum, Sudan last Friday.

The Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) president Nzamwita Vincent who attended the meeting told Ferwafa.rw that, “We held a successful meeting aimed at reviving our region. The meeting adopted reforms and we will have a new executive committee elected in November this year but the current President will stay in power to serve two more years. One woman will be elected into the next executive committee to handle women football development,”

“Rwanda was endorsed to host the women challenge cup this year. We requested an agreement to be signed between Rwanda and CECAFA and be given a guaranty from FIFA to cover the hosting budget before we determine the dates and venue for the tournament due later this year,” added Nzamwita.

The CECAFA Extra-Ordinary General endorsed Rwanda to host the 2017 CECAFA Women Challenge Cup, Burundi to host the Under 17 and Kenya to host the Men’s Challenge Cup in November and early December respectively.

The meeting also overhauled the current CECAFA statutes and enacted a new document to align CECAFA to CAF and FIFA’s.

The meeting also attended by COSAFA Chairman Philip Chiyangwa also endorsed an MOU entered into by CECAFA, COSAFA and UNAF and and a joint meeting of the three zonal Unions will be held before the end of the year.

Speaking to media after the meeting, CECAFA president Mutasim Gafar said CECAFA Programmes are back on track and the region will organise at least five competitions next year.

Other tournament namely Kagame Cup will be re-branded and hosted next year by Djibouti and there is a proposal to expand and make it bigger.

The 2018 edition of the U-17 tournament will be hosted by Tanzania while the U-20 tournament will be staged in Sudan.
