Cecafa Challenge Cup: Rwanda out to bag a win against Zanzibar

Posted on Dec 05 2017

Rwanda will want to make amends when they face Zanzibar in their second Group A match of the 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup on Tuesday at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

The Amavubi succumbed to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of hosts Kenya in their first Group A match on Sunday and they will push to go for a win.

Coach Antoine Hey’s side reached the final on six occasions, but have failed to lift the trophy in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2015 and have one title next to their name.

As they are sitting at the bottom of the table with zero points from one defeat, they will be motivated to add to their single trophy.

Looking at Zanzibar, their mission is start their group stage campaign with a bang and they will want ensure Rwanda lose their second match.

Zanzibar sit at number four on the group with zero points as they are yet to play at the tournament, but will want to bag their first three points to boost their morale.

The East African nation is yet to taste glory in the tournament and will change all of that to write a new chapter in the regional showpiece.

The encounter will be played at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos at 13:00 on Tuesday.

The second Grouo A encounter will be between Kenya who will be looking to bag their second 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge win when they face Libya at 15:15.

The Harambee Stars started their campaign on a high with a 2-0 win over the Amavubi of Rwanda on Sunday.

However, facing a desperate Libya, who are chasing for their first win, will not be an easy task for the hosts, but they will bank on home support.

Coach Paul Put’s men are sitting at the top of Group A with three points and will be gunning for their second win to boost their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

A win for them will take them closer to the knock-out stages with six points and they will also hope to shut the back door and not concede.

Looking at the Mediterranean Knights, Libya’s start was disappointing as they drew 0-0 against Tanzania in the group’s second match on Sunday.

Sitting at number two in the group with one point allows them to go all out against the hosts and grab a win.

However, they will have to fight harder and ensure they convert their chances as they fired blanks against the Taifa Stars in their first match.

This will be the second encounter between the two nations following the friendly match in 2004 which was won by Libya with a 2-0 score.

Group B will also be in action as Ethiopia takes on South Sudan in Kakamega.

Meanwhile defending champions played a goalless draw against Burundi on Monday in Group B’s opening match played in Kakamega.
