CAF CC: Rayon Sports FC secures crucial victory over Costa do Sol

Posted on Apr 07 2018

The Azam Rwanda Premier League champions Rayon Sports FC edged closer to the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup as they thumped Mozambican football side, Club Desportivo Costa do Sol on Friday.

Both sides met in the 2nd round of the 1/16th first leg of the CAF Confederation Cup in a game which was held at Stade de Kigali.

New signing Shaban Hussein Tshabalala scored a double in the 45th minute and 83rd minute while Muhire Kevin scored the other goal in the 77th minute.

The Blues finished the game with ten as pivotal midfielder Kwizera Pierre was sent off in the second half for a second bookable offence.

The win will see the Blues head into the return leg on April 17 with a mission of not conceding any goal to ensure that they seal their place in the lucrative group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Rayon Sports Fc reached this tage after dropping to CAF Confederation Cup after a 2-0 aggregate loss at hands of Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in CAF Champions League first round.

Should the 8-time Rwandan champions eliminate Club Desportivo Costa do Sul, it will be the first time for a Rwandan club to reach the group stages of any CAF competition.

Last season, Rayon Sports played the CAF Confederation Cup as Peace Cup winners and managed to reach play-off stage, before losing to Nigerian side Rivers United.

Then under the tutelage of Burundian Djuma Massoudi Irambona, Rayon knocked-out Wau Salaam of South Sudan in the preliminary round and Mali’s Onze Createurs in the first round, respectively.
