Kagame Cup 2018: Rayon Sports beat LLB to face Azam Fc in quarter final round

Rwandan representative Rayon Sports Fc thrashed Burundian outfit Lydia Ludic 3-1 to set-up a quarter-final clash against reigning champions Azam Fc in the 2018 CECAFA Kagame Cup Tournament currently underway in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

On Thursday night, Rayon Sports were involved in a final Group B match against neighbours Lydia Ludic which was staged at Azam Sports Complex in Chamazi.

The Blues earned a deserved 3-1 victory courtesy of goals from centre back Rwatubyaye Abdul, Muhire Kevin and skipper Pierre Kwizera respectively.

Lydia Ludic earned their consolation goal through Ugandan import Dan Wagaluka.

In the other game held on the same night, Kenyan league champions Gor Mahia earned a 2-0 goal victory over AS Ports to secure five points courtesy of goals scored by Otieno Philemon and Charles Momanyi.

Rayon Sports and Gor Mahia finished joint top in Group B with five points to book quarter final slots as two best ranked table leaders.

AS Ports finish ranked third on four points while Lydia Ludic are ranked bottom of the standings with only one point.

To determined, Group B winner, CECAFA used a FIFA play Tie breaker rule which saw Gor Mahia topple the standings thanks to their 4 yellow cards secured in the group stage while Rayon Sports Fc who accumulated 5 yellow cards qualified to second slot.

Best Losers
Azam Rwanda Premier League champions APR Fc exited the tournament after AS Ports of Djibouti and JKU of Zanzibar qualified to the quarter-finals as the two losing sides.

Quarter-final line-up
The first quarter-final round matches are scheduled for Sunday with Kenyan side Gor Mahia taking on Ugandan league champions Vipers SC who finished second in Group A with five points.

In the other encounter, Tanzanian giants Simba SC who finished on top of Group C standings with 7 points will face AS Ports of Djibouti who finished as the second best loser in Group B with four points and a deficit of one goal.

Action will continue on Monday when Group A winners Azam FC will be up against Group B’s first runner-up Rayon Sports FC before Group C first runner-up Singida United takes on the Zanzibar’s JKU who qualified as the first best loser based to their third place finish in Group A with four points and a +1 goal difference.

Top Scorers
Rayon Sports skipper Pierre Kwizera is among the top three best ranked top scorers who have scored with three goals. He is joined by Azam Fc striker Iddi Shaabani and Simba SC’s new signing Salamba Adam.

Meanwhile, a total of 52 goals have been scored in the 18 group matches played since June 29, 2018.
