Rayon Sports chase first Group Stage win

Rwanda’s Rayon Sports will be chasing their first win in the group stage of the 2018 CAF Confederation Cup when they play away to USM Alger at Mustapha Tchaker Stadium in Blida, Algeria on Sunday, Kick-off is at 21h00 CAT.

Rayon Sports who departed for Algiers on Thursday, heads into Sunday’s clash sitting in third spot with two points of the group standings which are topped by USM Alger after accumulating seven points in their first three matches.

The Algerian side, who reached the semi-finals of the 2002 CAF Cup Winners Cup, thumped Tanzania side Young Africans 4-0 in their first Group D game at home, before drawing 0-0 with Kenyan outfit Gor Mahia away and defeated Rayon Sports 2-1 last week in Kigali.

Meanwhile, Rayon are placed third on the group standings having accumulated two points from two matches.

The Dunu Slayers remain winless in the group stage after losing to Alger and they will be desperate to secure their first win on Sunday.

The Rwandan side, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2002 CAF Confederation Cup, drew with Gor Mahia at home in their first Group D game, before recording another draw against Young Africans away.

Kenyan side, Gor Mahia who will be away to Tanzania’s Young Africans have five points in three matches played so far.

The Blues lost their first leg match against USM Alger 2-1 last week and will be hoping to secure their first group stage away in Algeria, a mission that seems impossible following the absence of six of their key players namely; Kevin Muhire and Mutsinzi Ange Jimmy who are suspended due to accumulated yellow cards and skipper Kwizera Pierro and center back Faustin Usengimana who are focused on securing professional deals with clubs yet to be known, Rutanga Eric and Niyonzima Olivier are nursing Hamstring strain and Quadriceps strain 2nd degree respectively.

Burkina Faso match referee Juste Ephrem Zio will take charge of the game between Alger and Rayon.

The other Group D game between Young Africans and Gor Mahia will take place at the National Stadium in Dar Es Salaam on Sunday at 21h00 CAT.

The top two teams from the group will advance to the quarter-finals of the competition after match day six of the group stage.
