Mukura VS upsets Rayon Sports to qualify for CAF CC

Posted on Aug 13 2018

Mukura VS beat Rayon Sport Fc 3-1 on penalties to win the 2018 edition of Peace Cup and seal a place in next Confederations of African Football Confederations Cup Tournament.

After playing normal 90 minutes and a further 30 minutes of extra time, both Mukura VS and Rayon Sports could not find the goal forcing them to go for spot-kicks to determine the eventual winner.

Mukura VS edged Rayon Sports 3-1 with Gael Duhayindavyi, Hakizimana Kevin and Hassan Rugirayabo converting all their penalties while Ingabire Regis saved spot kicks from Bimenyimana Bonfils Caleb and Mugume Yassin while Rwatubyaye Abdul’s attempt went off target with Yannick Mukunzi being the only player who well converted his penalty.

Mukura VS were also the cup winners in 1978, 1986, 1990 and 1992. Previously, they had lost three finals in a space of 10 years; first, 4-2 to APR – again in penalty shootout – in 1999; then 3-0 to Rayon Sports in 2005; and then 1-0 to the now defunct Atraco in 2009.

Mukura VS, winners of the 2018 Peace Cup will automatically represent Rwanda at next year’s Total CAF Confederation Cup while APR Fc who won the 3rd place match beating Sunrise FC 1-0 will only participate in the Champions League following their Azam Rwanda Premier League victory in June this year.
