CECAFA Kagame Cup: Good start for APR FC & Green Eagles in Group C

Three-time champions APR FC and Zambian side Green Eagles got off to brilliant starts as they won their opening Group C matches on the opening day of the 2019 CECAFA Kagame Cup which was held at Stade de Kigali.

The first match pitted Green Eagles against Somalian side Heegan FC at 13:00. Zambian side earned the victory through Kennedy Musonda in the 26th minute while Spencer Sautu doubled the lead in the 51st minute.

The first game was followed with an opening ceremony with a performance of Rwanda National Ballet and acrobatic performance displaying placards of all participating clubs in this tournament.

In the second game, APR FC scored a late winner from central defender Manzi Thierry in the 93rd minute to hand the military side a bright start in the tournament.

APR FC had a complete new face with new recruits making their debut for the military side namely; Omar Rwabugiri signed from Mukura, Mutsinze Ange, Manzi Thierry, Niyonzima Olivier and Manishimwe Djabel from APR FC, Rwabuhihi Placide from SC Kiyovu, Nkomezi Alex from Mukura, Ishimwe Kevin from AS Kigali and Nshimiyimana Muhamed from Police FC respectively.

Green Eagles leaders Group C now with two points while APR FC lie second on goal difference aspect.

Sunday’s Matches
The second day of the CECAFA Kagame Cup resumes on Sunday with a double header at Stade Amahoro and Stade Huye respectively.

In Group B, Kenyan side Bandari FC face Ugandan champions KCCA at 13:00 at Stade Huye before reigning champions Azam FC host home side Mukura FC at 15h30.

In Group A, Tanzanian side KMC takes on South Sudan representatives Atlabara Fc at 13:00 before former CAF Champions League winners TP Mazembe take on Rwandan league champions Rayon Sports FC at 15:30.

The region’s oldest continental club championship is slated to climax on July 21 with two teams from each group advance to the quarter finals.

The winner of the annual tournament stands to pocket $30,000 (Rwf. 27 million) in prize money while runners up will receive $20,000 (Rwf. 18 million) and $10,000 (Rwf. 9 million) respectively.
