CECAFA Kagame Cup: Gor Mahia edge AS Ports to power into last eight

Kenyan league giants Gor Mahia eased past into the quarter final round of the CECAFA Kagame Cup 2019 following a 2-0 win over AS Ports of Djibouti on Wednesday at Stade Umuganda in Rubavu District.

Goals from Boniface Omondi in the 70th minute and Dennis Oswald in the 94th minute was all that Gor Mahia coach Hassan Oktay needed to overcome a stubborn AS Ports whose football display has grown in recent years.

Gor Mahia who had beaten AS Maniema 2-1 on Monday moved top of Group D with six points.

In the second game, AS Maniema Union of DR Congo registered their first victory in the tournament as they defeated KMKM of Zanzibar 2-0 courtesy of goals from Likwera Denis in the 50th minute before KMKM’s defender Hafid Mohamed Ali gifted the Congolese with an own goal in the 64th minute.

AS Maniema Union lie in second slot tied on three points with AS Ports ahead of their tricky tie due on July 14 at Stade Umuganda while Zanzibar’s Kikosi Maalum Cha Kuzuia Magendo (KMKM) who face Gor Mahia on July 15 are yet to pick a point in this group.

Final Group Action in Group C
On Thursday, Kigali Stadium is hosting Group C’s final matches with Ugandan side Proline FC and Zambia’s Green Eagles FC facing off in a tricky decisive tie joins former Rwandan champions APR FC in the quarter final round.

Green Eagles FC and Proline Fc are joint on three points, on goals scored and goals conceded and either side will be aiming for a win to go through to the quarter final.

Three-time champions APR FC who have already sealed a ticket to the last eight face Somalia’s Heegan FC who have already exited the tournament with no point in two matches played so far.

Two teams from each group will advance to the quarter final round of the region’s oldest continental club championship which is slated to climax on July 21.

The winner of the annual tournament stands to pocket $30,000 (Rwf. 27 million) in prize money while runners up will receive $20,000 (Rwf. 18 million) and $10,000 (Rwf. 9 million) respectively.
