Posted on Aug 14 2019

Rwanda U-15 National Team head coach Yves Rwasamanzi has named a final 20-youth squad which will represent the country at the CECAFA U-15 Tournament due to kick-off on Friday in Asmara, Eritrea.

Rwanda is been placed in Group B of the CECAFA Under-15 Tournament and quest for honours begin against South Sudan on August 17 after which they face Ethiopia on August 20 before wrapping up the group stages on August 24 against Uganda.

The inaugural tournament is to help the region prepare for the Under 17 AFCON qualifiers that start early next year.

The team departs Kigali on Thursday morning (01:00) for Eritrea aboard Ethiopian Airways with expected arrival in Asmara due at 12:00. In Asmara, they will be residing at Expo Hotel alongside Kenya who arrive din the country on Tuesday.

Early today, FERWAFA President Sekamana Jean Damascene met the national team and urged players to represent the country well by staging triumphant performances, maintain discipline and be focused in their scheduled matches.

During today’s press conference, the National U-15 Team Head Coach Yves Rwasamanzi said, ’We thank a lot FERWAFA for giving us an opportunity to participate in CECAFA Challenge Cup U-15 because not all countries will be there. We authorities to keep up this way by supporting youth football,’

’We are going to Eritrea not only to prepare the future national team of Rwanda’s U-17 Team which shall compete in the next edition of AFCON U-17 Tournament but also to compete for the title because it has been a long time since Rwanda won an international/regional football tournament,’ added Rwasamanzi.

The FERWAFA General Secretary said, ’Participating in CECAFA U-15 Tournament conforms to our youth development strategy whose foundation is to nurture talented players from young ages. This is the opportunity for us to prepare a team which represent Rwanda in upcoming tournaments from the Under-17 level,’

’We are committed to setting up a strategy of making a following up these crop of players who are going in Eritrea and other talented players who were selected in the just concluded FERWAFA Youth Competitions,’

Pool C, which has three teams including Tanzania, Sudan and Djibouti, will produce only two teams to join those in pool A and either Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia and South Sudan in Pool B.

Hosts Eritrea last staged a Cecafa tournament in 2010 on the occasion of the Under-20 Challenge Cup. The new tournament, to be sponsored by the “Fifa Forward Programme” initiative, will be the first under-15 tournament to be staged in Africa.

The top three teams in Pools A and B will qualify for the quarter-finals.
