CECAFA U-15 Cup: Hat-trick for Irahamye as Rwanda edge South Sudan in Group B

Posted on Aug 17 2019

Forward Irahamye Eric netted a hat-trick to help Rwanda defeated South Sudan in their first Group B game on Saturday at the on-going CECAFA U-15 Challenge Cup in Asmara, Eritrea.

After a dull first half, Yves Rwamasanzi’s side improved their game plan with Irahamye playing a central forward role, replacing Mugisha Edrick Kenny who had to be substuted by Irakoze Jean Paul.

With good combination from Niyogisubizo Asante Sana and Hoziyana Kenedy, Irahamye thrice benefited from poor defending of South Sudan to score brilliant goals in the 43rd, 73rd and 79th minutes which earned Rwanda a perfect start.

Rwanda coach Yves Rwasamanzi praised the boys for the good start despite a sluggish first half performance. He said, ‘We didn’t play to our best in the first half with boys losing so many balls but managed to return back stronger in the second half. We take some pivotal lessons which will help us to improve our performance in the second game,’

In the first game of the day, Uganda defeated Ethiopia 3-0 with striker Devis Ogwal scoring a brace while Abasi Kyeyune scored the other goal for the Ugandan side.

Uganda and Rwanda now topple Group B with three points each while South Sudan and Ethiopia lie bottom of the log pointless.

Action continues on Sunday with Group A action where Sudan face Kenya at 13:00 while Burundi takes on Somalia at 15:30.

Rwanda will be in action again on Wednesday, against Ethiopia then take on Tanzania on Friday, August 23 and wind up with a tie against neighbors Uganda on Sunday, August 25, 2019.

The top two teams from each group will automatically qualify to the semis, set to be played on August 28, while the final has been scheduled for August 30, 2019, in Asmara.
