Rwanda falls to Mozambique, focus switched to Cameroon tie on Sunday

Posted on Nov 14 2019

Rwanda senior men’s football team endured a poor start to the 2021 Total African Cup of Nations Qualifying phase following a 0-2 loss to the Mambas of Mozambique in the opening match of Group F played on Thursday night at Estádio do Zimpeto in Maputo.

Edson Sitoe broke the deadlock for the Mozambicans from the penalty spot in the 28th minute to give the home fans a huge reason to celebrate.

It was soon 2-0 to the Mambas just after the half-hour mark when Edson Mexer hit the back much to the delight of the home crowd.

The Amavubi gave in a fight to get their way back into the game, but they could not hit the target despite having a few decent chances.

With the victory, the Mambas of Mozambique are at the summit of Group F with three points. The Mambas are two points ahead of Cameroon and Cape Verde who played to a goalless draw on Wednesday night.

Rwanda will now hope to bounce back at home on Sunday when they face the Indomitable Lions in Kigali while Mozambique can pull clear in the group if they get maximum points in their away trip to the Cape Verde Islands.
