AS Kigali to represent Rwanda at 2020/21 CAF Confederation Cup

Posted on Jul 31 2020

The FERWAFA Executive Committee which met on July 31, 2020 picked AS KIGALI as Rwanda’s representative in the 2020/2021 edition of the CAF Confederation Cup Competition.

The decision comes two months after the Peace Cup Competition 2020 edition was declared null and void by the FERWAFA Executive Committee Meeting held on May 22, 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The FERWAFA Executive Committee’s decision to pick AS KIGALI to represent Rwanda at the next edition of the CAF Confederation Cup was based on the following provisions;

I. Reference made to FERWAFA Peace Cup Regulations 2020 Competition, under Chapter 2. Compliance with FERWAFA Regulations, point 3.3, which states that, ‘The team that emerges as winner shall represent Rwanda in the CAF Confederation Cup Competition of the following year;

II. Based on the current CAF Confederation Cup regulations, which were approved by the CAF Executive Committee of the 17th July 2019 and came into force immediately:

III. The CAF Confederation Cup regulation, in its General Provisions, point 1 states, “The Confederation of African Football shall organise a yearly competition called “CAF Confederation Cup”, open to the teams of Cup Winners clubs of the affiliated associations. The winner of CAF Confederation Cup must take part in the next edition.

IV. In Chapter IV. Engagements, Point 6 states, “If for any reason, the national cup of a federation did not take place, the federation in question has the right to submit the participation request of the same club(s) engaged having played the national cup and the national league from the previous season;

V. Since AS Kigali is the reigning champion of the Rwanda Peace Cup Competition following their heroic performances in the 2019 edition which saw them defeat SC Kiyovu 2-1 in extra time of the final held at Stade de Kigali on Thursday, July 4, 2019. And considering that Peace Cup Men’s 2020 Edition didn’t take place;

VI.Based on article 33 of the FERWAFA Statutes of 08th September 2018, FERWAFA Executive Committee has the duty to enforce the Statutes and regulations of the FERWAFA, CAF, FIFA and any other regional football organization recognized by CAF and FIFA.

AS KIGALI joins league champions APR FC as Rwanda’s representatives in the next edition of CAF Interclubs Competitions. APR FC will take part in the CAF Champions League in the 2020/2021 edition.
