Rwanda draw with Congo in Pre-CHAN Friendly

Posted on Jan 07 2021

Rwanda National Team ‘’Amavubi Stars’’ overturned a two-goal deficit to draw with Congo in the first pre-CHAN friendly.

It was the first of two warmup games as both sides gear up for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled to take place in Cameroon starting from January 16th to February 7th.

After going down 2-0 early in the first half, the Amavubi fought back to salvage a draw late in the game. Congolese Striker Bersyl Obassi opened the scoring in the 9th minute before grabbing a brace in the 26th minute.

Rwanda pulled one back two minutes later thanks to a header from Martin Fabrice Twizeyimana. Later in the game Rwanda equalized through Mico Justin who tapped in a rebound from Bertrand Iradukunda’s header.

Rwanda Head Coach Vincent Mashami was pleased with the fighting spirit thus drawing concerns with the defensive frailties early in the game: ‘’Our game plan didn’t go as we first anticipated, we had many defensive frailties at the start of the game thus conceding two early goals but I was pleased to see the reaction of the boys, we played in their half for almost the entirety of the second half, we have learned our lesson and we are going to address it in the next fixture’’

The Amavubi Stars will play the second friendly on Sunday January 10 with the same opponent at 3.00PM.

Rwanda is pooled in Group C of the African Nations Championship with Uganda, Morocoo and Togo.
