FIFA opens Regional Development Office in Kigali

Friday, February 19 2021, the football governing body officially opened its regional development office in Kigali following the agreement reached with the government of Rwanda as a host nation.

The inauguration of the office was attended by the FIFA president Mr Gianni Infantino, Dr. Vincent Biruta the Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju the Minister of Sports, Jean Damascène Sekamana FERWAFA President and other FIFA Member Associations from the CECAFA region.

In his remarks, FERWAFA President commended FIFA and the Government of Rwanda for reaching an agreement aimed at establishing the FIFA RDO in Kigali; ‘’Rwanda Football Federation is profoundly grateful that Kigali has been chosen to be the home of FIFA Regional Development Office which proves the extent of FIFA’s commitment in the development of football in Africa.’’

Ferwafa President acknowledged the efforts of the government of Rwanda to reach the agreement with FIFA to open the Regional Development Office: ’’We salute both the Government of Rwanda and FIFA for reaching an agreement to host the regional office in Rwanda. By approving this agreement, the Government of Rwanda demonstrated its visionary leadership and its objective to gradually achieve acceptable life standards for the society through football.’’

Launching the Office, Infantino commended the President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame for welcoming FIFA to start operations, through the Regional Offices that the World governing body opened in Kigali.

“We have decided to open this regional office because we are aware that we need to do more for football development, competitions organization and we need to do more for East Africa because it has such a big passion for football. This office’s main task is not to organize meetings but to develop football,” Infantino added.

The regional office opens in Kigali after a partnership agreement was reached between FIFA and Rwanda. Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Dr. Vincent Biruta said the partnership is a testimony of excellent collaboration that already exists between Rwanda and FIFA. “With the establishment of this office, we are looking forward to expediting these projects which will boost football promotion and development of it targets at the grassroots level in Rwanda and the region in general,” he said.

FIFA’s regional office in Kigali will have the mandate to coordinate all its related activities in specific regions, provide strategic guidance to regional Member Associations, and provide recommendations to FIFA Headquarters for development support in the region.
