2021 AFCON Qualifiers: Rwanda beat Mozambique to move second.

Posted on Mar 24 2021

Rwanda jumped to second place of Group F following a narrow win against Mozambique on Wednesday March 24 2021 at Stade de Kigali.

Medie Kagere, Haruna Niyonzima and Ange Mutsinzi failed to score for the Amavubi Stars early in the first half. Both Haruna and Medie fired wide while Mutsinzi’s shot from long range was saved by Julio Pedro Frenque the Mozambican goalie.

The Amavubi Stars opened the scoring through Lague Byiringiro in the 68th minute following a powerful drive by Medie Kagere on the left hand, the attacker combined with Imanishimwe Emmanuel who set Lague Byiringiro for an opener from long range.

The Mambas of Mozambique piled a lot of pressure on Amavubi but Emery Mvuyekure denied them three times in a space of 10 minutes.

The hosts also stifled much of the usual creativity from Amavubi midfielders led by captain Haruna Niyonzima, Yannick Mukunzi and Olivier Niyonzima who replaced Steve Rubanguka. In the second half there were limited chances before Rwanda opened the scoring.

Speaking to the media after the game, captain Haruna Niyonzima looked a happy man: ‘’We are happy to win at home, we showed good spirit from the first minute to the last one. Coming into the tie we knew it wasn’t going to be easy, we had to stay calm, execute the plan rolled out by the coaching staff and wait for our chances, fortunately it worked out and we look forward to the next game in Cameroon.’’

Head Coach Mashami Vincent was please with his team’s efforts after snapping up the second spot of the group: ‘’I am happy today, the boys showed character throughout for them to win this game. Today’s game meant a lot to us because all our chances for qualification lied in it, we gave it everything we had and I am happy we got the winner. We could have scored twice or three times but I will take this and prepare for Cameroon next week.’’

Rwanda will face Cameroon on Tuesday March 30 2021 in Douala. The Amavubi Stars will fly to Cameroon on Friday March 26 2021 via Rwandair.
