GIRLS KICKING GOALS, BREAKING BARRIERS”, A DAY OF GIRLS EMPOWERMENT AND PASSION IN RUBAVU

Under the vibrant theme “Girls Kicking Goals, Breaking Barriers,” the Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA), in collaboration with FIFA through the FIFA Women’s Football Development Program, brought life, energy, and inspiration to Rubavu District. The district hosted a colorful Women’s Football Campaign that welcomed 96 young girls, with 48 under 13 and 48 under 15, to a day filled with joy, learning, and powerful play, today on 26th July 2025.

More than just a football event, it was a festival of empowerment. The pitch in Rubavu transformed into a safe space of dreams and discovery, where young girls not only kicked footballs but also shattered stereotypes, challenged norms, and dared to believe in themselves.

The campaign was honored by the presence of two FIFA Women’s Football Development Experts, Ms. Thubaelihle Bridgette Sibanda and Ms. Sylvania Armel Azihar who traveled to Rwanda to witness and support this important initiative. Both expressed admiration for the impressive organization and FERWAFA’s steadfast dedication to growing the women’s game.

“It is heartwarming to see such commitment,” said Ms. Sibanda. “Today’s campaign is a reflection of the passion and vision FERWAFA holds for the future of women’s football in Rwanda. We are proud to witness and support such dedication.”

The FERWAFA Commissioner in charge of Women’s Football Development also addressed the participants, expressing her sincere gratitude to FIFA for the continued support.

“With this opportunity,” she stated, “we commit ourselves not only to promoting participation but also to identifying and nurturing talent that will shape the future of women’s football in Rwanda.”

As the day unfolded, the field echoed with laughter, applause, and encouragement. Football drills turned into life lessons. Friendships were formed. Dreams were awakened. And as the sun began to set, the girls left the field not just with sharpened skills, but with the confidence that they, too, belong in football.

Ms. Sibanda closed the day with a powerful reminder:

“We will continue to advocate and stand for women’s football, because when girls play, societies change.”

This campaign is part of the broader Women’s Football Development Project funded by FIFA, which seeks to not only introduce girls to football, but also to build sustainable structures that support women’s teams across the country.

As the next phase of the program, FERWAFA will soon kick off a capacity-building workshop for women’s football team leaders. These workshops set to begin this coming Monday in Rubavu for Division 2 teams and in Kigali for Division 1 teams will equip team leaders with essential managerial and technical skills to run their clubs effectively. In addition to training, women’s teams will also receive critical football equipment, including kits, balls, and more, to boost their daily training and match preparation.

With each step, Rwanda moves closer to a stronger, more inclusive football future, where every girl can dream, play, and rise.
